I hate Internet Explorer. I always have, before I used firefox, I used netscape, never IE. With firefox dominating the "geek" community, why hasn't it spread out into the rest of the "not-geek" world? There are only 2 major reasons.
1. It is bundled. If IE wasn't bundled with Windows, I think that Netscape would still be the main browser. IE7 is nothing more than the crapware that is usually bundled with Windows.
2. People don't know any better. Why do people still use AOL? Because they don't know there is something better. Same with IE. If other users would just use Firefox then we would be better off. There are several reasons for this. First of all there would be less viruses/botnets. Firefox is way more secure and the "non-geek" internet users are the ones who are most likely to have botnet software and viruses. If these were cut off at the source then the self-replicating viruses would have a harder time getting from computer to computer.
What can we do about this?
Just spread firefox. The less people that use IE the better off everyone else is.
Someone reading this must be wondering why the hell someone would buy a Zune 30 now of all times. Out looking for a new ipod nano I came across the Zune 30 for 100 bucks. In brown. I figured what the hell 30gb is enough to hold every podcast and song I have. I bought the Zune 30 and here is a basic review.
Pros:
- Storage. What might not be enough for you is more than enough for me. If you still want a Zune but need more space check out the Zune 80.
- Screen. The screen is huge, 3 inches, and it looks great in most lighting conditions. like most LCDs it has problems in direct sunlight.
- Support. It supports WMA, mp3, ACC, WMV, H.264
- Sound quality is good not the best I have heard but it is pretty good.
- Wireless syncing and sharing.
- Must transcode for some video formats. No .ogg support.
- No Mac OS X support.
- Wireless syncing is somewhat buggy. Doesn't always work.
- It is huge in width.
- Battery life is not on par with iPod.
Good bang for the buck. You can buy it in some places for 90 dollars.
Taking a break from web development for a while, I decided to try to create a widget for my sidebar. I figured it would be damn hard and getting the text up would be a pain in the ass. But instead I found a simple tutorial on developing Sidebar widgets. I highly recommend trying this it was just too easy to resist, soon I made my own custom widgets. The great thing was is that the widgets are just HTML/JS/CSS/XML. Simple. Well, back to PHP!
My new HP dv9205us laptop finally came. It came with Vista home premium on it, which, contrary to popular belief, is actually not using not that slow.
Windows Vista is a resource hog, yes, that is very true. My laptop came with 1gb ram, a 120 gb HDD, and a 288mb graphics card. The cards memory is shared in that 1 gigabyte. The RAm usuage meter hovers around 48%-79% on average. I have a hard time getting it much further over while doing something useful/interesting. Meaning, when I am playing Silkroad online and doing my daily virus scan at the same time, the RAM usage hovers around 85%-80%. I have only rarely used any more than 85%.
So my main compliant of Vista is by far it's resource usage. So whats my favorite feature? No, it is not aero. It is the built in Speech Recognition tool. It works okay in the beginning. But, as you keep using it, it gets better.
So vista is okay now as it is, but there are better alternitives. Wait for SP1.
was it worth it?
Now that Vista is finally the big question in everyone's mind is: Was it worth the wait?
I personally think not. It looks to me like Microsoft playing catch-up with OSX and Unix/Linux(GNOME/KDE).
We will find out sooner or later.
So microsoft has launched a social network for IT pros, eh? Aggreg8.com the new domain name of Aggreg8 was once owned by an RSS feeder and they sold it for 5,000$ and moved to agger8.co.uk. The site it self looks like an alpha. It has very few members and the content is lacking. The site does not follow a strict format in places giving it a very alpha look and feel. They say they are “in conjunction with our partner Culminis,”. Culminis is a not for prfit IT focused organization.
Microsoft Public relations have said little about the site where as they are usually quick to announce products. I wonder why...
