This took a little longer than I thought. I figured that Google had surpasses good old Redmond a long time ago. Google has been beating the hell out of Live search(formerly MSN search). But does anyone really use Microsoft.com that much? The only thing that I can think of is that if they included Windows Update or all the Microsoft owned websites. Anyway, way to go Google, just don't become the new Microsoft.
Taking a break from web development for a while, I decided to try to create a widget for my sidebar. I figured it would be damn hard and getting the text up would be a pain in the ass. But instead I found a simple tutorial on developing Sidebar widgets. I highly recommend trying this it was just too easy to resist, soon I made my own custom widgets. The great thing was is that the widgets are just HTML/JS/CSS/XML. Simple. Well, back to PHP!
There are two very strange yet interesting open source initives. They are OScar and Stray Cinema. Stray Cinema is an open source film that anyone can download edit and change in anyway they want. OSCar is a project that is trying to build a new breed of cars using open source. Both of these projects are changing the way people think about open source. It is possibly bring open source to the TV screen and the garage of Joe Shmo. This could be what really defines Open Source to the rest of the world. Of course open source hasn't finished taking over the software world(a lot of the web though), so it will probably take a long time before anything like this really catches on.
Of course this is just my opinion but here is the list:
1. YouTube - An easy to use video webapp that didn't sacrifice power for looks.
2. flickr - A simple interface and ease of use brings flickr to #2.
3. youos - Nothing is more web 2.0 than bringing the desktop online!
4. digg - Digg incorporates many features and technologies that many other web 2 sites use, but digg really makes it look good while doing something useful.
5. Virb - the new social network really tries to hand you th keys when it comes to being able to make your homepage look good.
These were judged on a basis of application of latest technologies and the actual usefulness and user experience.
My new HP dv9205us laptop finally came. It came with Vista home premium on it, which, contrary to popular belief, is actually not using not that slow.
Windows Vista is a resource hog, yes, that is very true. My laptop came with 1gb ram, a 120 gb HDD, and a 288mb graphics card. The cards memory is shared in that 1 gigabyte. The RAm usuage meter hovers around 48%-79% on average. I have a hard time getting it much further over while doing something useful/interesting. Meaning, when I am playing Silkroad online and doing my daily virus scan at the same time, the RAM usage hovers around 85%-80%. I have only rarely used any more than 85%.
So my main compliant of Vista is by far it's resource usage. So whats my favorite feature? No, it is not aero. It is the built in Speech Recognition tool. It works okay in the beginning. But, as you keep using it, it gets better.
So vista is okay now as it is, but there are better alternitives. Wait for SP1.
Well I am sort of back, trying to get my blog off the dead side of things.
I've bought a brand new 17" Wide screen HD laptop for 799! With Vista... There en lies the problem, I am certainly not expecting it to be better than OS X but at least it will play games! I'll post a review when it finally arrives.
